Male Employees Getting More Salary Than Female Is Illegal Now

Spread the News

Women in Iceland have a reason to rejoice. In a bid to bridge the growing pay gap between men and women, on January 1, the country implemented a new law, which makes it illegal for male employees to be paid more than women doing the same job. The law was announced on International Women’s Day (March 8, 2017).

Even though gender pay gap is a burning issue all around the world, Iceland has become the first country in the world to pass a law like this.

As a result of this initiative, which has been passed by Iceland with an aim to eradicate gender pay gap by 2022, firms with more than 25 people in their staff would have to now obtain a government certificate, which will ensure pay equality. Those failing to do so would have to pay a hefty fine.

“We have had legislation saying that pay should be equal for men and women for decades now but we still have a pay gap. I think that now people are starting to realise that this is a systematic problem that we have to tackle with new methods,” Dagny Osk Aradottir Pind of the Icelandic Women’s Rights Association told Al Jazeera.

People from around the world are hailing Iceland’s decision, and are hoping the same for their respective countries. We hope to see a similar law in India too. For now, the wait is on.
